Dear Friend,
The University Hospital is proud to again be one of the presenting sponsors of Cover The Uninsured Week 2008 in Greater Cincinnati.
Supporting this initiative is significant for us in that it is directly in line with our vision: A healthy community through caring for people one individual at a time.
When it opened in 1823, the mission of the hospital was to provide care for the aged, indigent and orphaned. That mission to the community continues today, along with our missions as the only academic teaching hospital in the area and as the only regional tertiary referral center. As Cincinnati’s safety net hospital, we take our role in the community very seriously, and with pride. From our Medication Assistance Program to our After Hours Nurse Clinic at the City Gospel Mission to our support of the community and city health clinics, caring for the underserved has and will be a priority for the hospital. Last year alone, we provided $18 million in uncompensated health care.
But, access to quality health care is only one of the issues we face. The Institute of Medicine cites social and environmental conditions and the structural aspects of the health care system, in addition to access, as causes of health care disparities. University Hospital understands this and is continuously looking for better ways to make patient care as efficient, comfortable and comprehensive as possible and to meet the language, cultural and medical needs of all our patients.
Be assured that the established mission of the hospital, our support for Cover the Uninsured Week in Greater Cincinnati and our commitment to high quality care for all will continue in our pursuit to close the health gap. Working together, we can overcome these disparities so that equal health care is available for our entire community.
Sincerely,

James Kingsbury
